Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke
A Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke production of Martin McDonagh’s first play and his first in the Leenane Trilogy; A Skull in Connemara and The Lonesome West complete the cycle.
Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag, her manipulative ageing mother, who interferes in Maureen’s first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship.
The Beauty Queen of Leenane was the 1996 winner of the George Devine Award, won the Writer’s Guild Award for Best Fringe Play and also the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Newcomer. The play was nominated for six Tony awards and a Lawrence Olivier award.
